Carbonated water: cuts down on overeating
Last night, I went out drinking to an izakaya (a Japanese style pub, to put it simply).
Carbonated (fizzy) water seems to be all the rage in Japan recently, and though I hadn't thought much of it, I caught a Japanese TV programme saying that carbonated water helps ease the stomach, and that if you were planning to go out drinking, it was advised that you drink a bottle of carbonated water just beforehand.
I managed to gulp down about half a bottle, and though I didn't have a lot to drink, I felt pretty good, in a tipsy way. Also, I have a huge appetite, but probably due to the fizz which filled me up, I didn't each as much as I usually do.
Maybe I could've cut down on my portions more had I drunk the whole bottle.
I also found that carbonated water seems to be cheaper than regular mineral water - good news for us paupers. I got mine for around 80yen.
For anyone hoping to cut down on food quantities, or for those who are about to run on an enkai high, it might be worth trying out.

Cooking : Late night, easy, healthy recipe

I came across this dish on a Japanese TV program which was aimed at people, especially women, who had dinner late due to late working hours but wanted to take care of their health and beauty. They introduced a number of dishes and this is one of them; "stir fried vegetables over Atsuage (block of deep fried curd)". It may not sound very appetising to the Western ear, but I personally find it very filling, healthy and quite cheap too.
It includes some of the cheapest ingredients one can find in a Japanese supermarket; bean sprouts (moyashi), enoki mushroom and, as the title of the dish goes, deep-fried bean curd.

I added my little touch by including sliced onions.
If you don't mind simple tasting, healthy dishes, I recommend it :)

My limit for the next three weeks
Good evening.
It is I, Narise, but you may now call me the poor British pauper of Sapporo. Not the only one though I'm sure, hence the incorrect use of "the".
Anyway, continuing on with this new theme of my blog according to my last entry, I thought I would inform any such reader of my expenses for the next three weeks.
I have a total of around just over 10,000yen. (Make that around 60 quid or 100 dollars)
This is of course, not including rent or bills. It is the amount I have left after paying those.
At the moment I'm trying to limit my supermarket spending to around ¥2000 a week. I may be poor but I'm still trying to live a somewhat healthy lifestyle, hopefully leading to a beauty building regime, so I try to think about the food that I'm buying.
Which is why I am ever so grateful for the cheapness of soya beans products in Japan. For those of you who are unfamiliar, this includes tofu, natto, soy sauce and soy milk. To any fellow gaijins in Japan - I can already imagine a large majority of you squirming in your seat at the dreaded "n" word. But I myself am a big fan (it helps that I've been eating the stuff since I was able to ever place solid food in my mouth).
In conclusion, soy products are healthy, cheap and especially good for women as it helps the development of female hormones, apparently. And so they are one of my best friends.
I'm looking into more recipes that are cheap and healthy, and are safe to eat at late hours of the day.
I'm planning on updating this blog with a recipes that I found soon, so...stay tuned, folks.
Oh, hello New Life.
I'm amused that the title of my last entry, back in July, sums up these past 2 and a half (or perhaps 3 quarters to be a little more precise) months.
Since I last updated this blog I have moved to a new city, began a new job, and a new way of life.
Things had been ridiculously hectic as one will experience in any big move and career change, but the bottom line is I'm much happier.
To be honest, aside from what I wrote in the previous entry, the only thing I really miss about my past work is the salary.
I'm poor.
And I don't mean it in the same sense of how some people whine "I have no money!" as they stare longingly at that new shiny Mercedes (my knowledge of cars fail me) or that sparkly Gucci dress after having their perfectly balanced and filling breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Yes, it is almost a struggle for me to eat. Though that would perhaps be because I have put other, what I consider, more important things at the top of my "crucial purchases" rank.
My job is great because I only work for 5 to 6 hours a day, go in the afternoon and leave in the evenings. I have never been a morning person so though it means I go to bed much later it works perfectly. Also, as it's part time it allows me to take on any other jobs or work, which is one of the main reasons I chose it.
Nonetheless, after living what I now realise was a luxurious life without any worries in regards to money, the sudden drop was pretty tough.
Yet, I am learning to spend my money sensibly, and am actually strangely enjoying the methods I am learning in spending less but still enjoying life.
Therefore, I am going to continue this Blog in a slightly different manner, focusing more on my "pauper life". I will proceed to update with personal ramblings, but I hope to slightly confine my entries to how I use and spend my money, and purchases I made and recommend to other paupers in Japan, if they ever stumble across here.
I haven't found any other jobs at this point in time, but as I have now approached my late twenties last month, I am going to try and do what I have always wanted to do, as I think it's "now or never".
Details will come up in further entries, if you are curious ;)
